A set of rocket propelled grenades were found beneath a bush.

On Tuesday at 2.15pm a council worker was walking across Wanstead Flats when they spotted something unusual in the undergrowth.

Hidden beneath a bush were three Rocket Power Grenade (RPG) munitions.

They called the police who sent specialist officers to the scene.

The rockets were safely removed for examination.

Officers and dogs from the Met’s Dog Support Unit conducted a search of the area to ensure no further presence of explosives.

Detective Superintendent Zena Marshall from the Met’s North West Basic Command Unit said: “I would like to thank the member of the council who diligently brought the discovery of this ammunition to our attention, allowing us to respond quickly and with the right resources.

“Specialist colleagues from across the Met reviewed this ammunition and although it was deemed to have once been active, we are satisfied the pieces have been deactivated and are no longer live.

“I understand the discovery of such unusual pieces of ammunition may concern members of the community, but I can assure you we have carried out a thorough search of the area to ensure no other similar pieces of ammunition are present.

“As demonstrated today, we also have highly-trained specialist officers who can respond to such discoveries instantaneously.

"I’m thankful to these colleagues for their assistance in this instance. If you do see anything suspicious, please speak to a police officer, call 999 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

RPGs are typically fired from the shoulder of a soldier and are used to take out tanks.
