Bakers from Asda’s Southgate Circus store visited a renowned Enfield flour mill this week in a bid to get extra tips from experts in the baking industry for pancake day.

GR Wright & Sons, London’s only remaining flour mill and Enfield’s oldest business, has supplied Asda for over 20 years.

The three Asda colleagues, who all work in the in-store bakery at the Southgate Circus store, were given the chance to learn more about the process of flour-milling and see how Wright’s products reach the store’s shelves.

Tottenham Independent:

GR Wright & Sons has been trading as a family business for over 150 years. David Wright is the fifth generation of the family to run the Mill. They aim to produce quality flours and baking mixes by blending traditional skills with modern working practices. Wrights mainly use local wheat to mill its flours, sourcing wheat from Hertfordshire, Essex and East Anglia.

With shows such as The Great British Bake Off and Masterchef helping to give baking a resurgence to the modern audience, a new generation has come to love baking. Dimtrios Kechagias, aged 23, was keen to learn from the experts as the newest member of the Asda bakery team.

Dimitrios said; “It was an amazing opportunity to visit the flour mill which is such an iconic place that is right on our doorstep. We often forget that products on the shelves are made right here in Enfield.

“I’ve only worked in the bakery for a year and I’m still learning each day so it was good to hear Richard’s advice for new bakers. He spoke about the importance of taking your time and not rushing the process. Hopefully I can put my pancake practice to use back in store.”

Richard Hawe, National Account Manager at Wrights Flour & Baking, said; “We were delighted to welcome the three Asda colleagues for a look round the mill and it was a good opportunity for the in-store bakers to see where Wrights baking flours are actually produced. Some pancake making practice was enjoyed too.

“Locally produced products have less food miles and are the brands that local families have grown up with and love. Many people in the community will have a connection with the Mill and know someone in their family that worked for us. Supporting local products also helps to support the community and local jobs.”
