Nearly 200 flats could transform part of a town centre high street that was once home to a major department store.

Haringey councillors will this week decide whether to approve plans for an eight-storey block of flats on the site of the former BHS store in Wood Green, which closed in 2016.

The proposed building would provide 197 homes – 40 per cent of which would be classed as affordable – as well as a hotel, shops and a public courtyard.

It would feature a mix of one, two, three and four-bed units, with a third of the affordable homes classed as suitable for families.

Council officers say the development “would have a positive impact on the on the visual appearance of the area, would protect key local views and would not harm local heritage assets”.

Only one person has objected to the proposals, raising fears they would lead to overcrowding in the area and could have “an enormous amount of traffic to an already congested High Road”.

But the Future Wood Green Business Improvement District has backed the plans, claiming they will bring “significant investment to attract businesses back into some of the vacant shop units”.

The council aims to create 6,400 new homes, 4,000 new jobs and a “thriving, prosperous, green town centre” in Wood Green.

A decision on whether to go ahead with the development will be made at Haringey Council’s planning committee on Thursday (May 9).

The meeting will take place at Haringey Civic Centre at 7pm.
