London's quietest train station Angel Road has closed. But a new, more modern overground station has opened as part of a north London council's plans to improve the area.

Meridian Water Station opened on Monday (June 3) and has been equipped with stairs, lifts and step-free access to make it more accessible for passengers.

From September 2019, two additional trains are expected to run every hour between Stratford and Meridian Water.

The station will be at the heart of Enfield Council's £6bn development project, which will lead to the creation of 10,000 homes and 6,000 jobs.

Tottenham Independent:

Cllr Nesil Caliskan, leader of Enfield Council, was joined by Chris Grayling, Secretary of State for Transport and Heidi Alexander, Deputy London Mayor for Transport at the opening of Meridian Water station.

The leader said: “We have also selected a developer to deliver the first phase of homes and workspaces with the first completions due in 2022 and we have already started work on the second phase of the development which will be 100 per cent affordable housing.

“There will also be fantastic opportunities for local people and businesses to locate their enterprises on excellent sites within Meridian Water which are not due to be developed as part of the wider scheme for a number of years.

Tottenham Independent:

“The opening of the station – which has been project managed and funded by Enfield Council underpins the whole development and we are very pleased that it will act as a springboard to allow the whole of the project to thrive as well as massively benefiting the existing population of Angel Edmonton.”

Chris Grayling said: “By working closely with Enfield Council and Network Rail, we have provided significant investment to improve this vital rail link, which will allow more people access to the railway and facilitate the council’s plans to increase housing in the area.”

Meridian Water station replaces Angel Road station which, according to statistics from gov.uk, was London's second most unused station.

Tottenham Independent:

During 2017 and 2018, Angel Road had around 33,000 passengers compared to one million weekly passengers travelling into the capital in the same period.

The new station is part of The Lee Valley Rail Programme and the London Railway Upgrade Plan to improve West Anglia line.

The package of improvements include an extra 5.5 kilometres of new track to help with faster train to North East London and reduce congestion in Edmonton, and upgrades at Tottenham Hale station and Northumberland Park station.
