New street lighting to be installed across the borough could cut road accidents and boost public safety.

Enfield Council is planning to upgrade its street lighting to environmentally-friendly LED lamps, which create a whiter glow that is closer to daylight than the yellow tinge of the current lamps.

As well as saving a large amount of money on energy costs – £382,000 every year once the roll-out is complete – it is hoped the new lamps will have much wider benefits.

A council report says the improved lighting “will help both motorists and pedestrians see more clearly at night and so could help reduce accidents, as well as improving the general feeling of safety”.

LED – short for light-emitting diode – lamps are more energy-efficient than sodium bulbs and will help the council to cut carbon emissions.

They will be individually controlled using a new central management system – which could mean fewer complaints from residents being kept awake at night by bright lights.

Speaking at a cabinet meeting on Wednesday (June 12), cabinet member for environment Cllr Guney Dogan said: “I had a case from a lady saying, ‘in front of my window, there is too much light’.

“This will be smart technology for the future, which will allow it to be controlled so you can increase the light or reduce it down.”

Cabinet members approved the introduction of LED lamps and will be voted on at a full council meeting next month.
