A woman who was punched and repeatedly head-butted by her former boyfriend following a disagreement has spoken following his sentence.

Emma Bignall, from Loughton, read her victim impact statement at Basildon Crown Court after Jak Kosta, 32, of no fixed address, was jailed for 15 months.

Kosta was sentenced for causing actual bodily harm and criminal damage on Wednesday, June 12.

He pleaded guilty to the offences and was also made subject of a ten-year restraining order.

Ms Bingall said: “I was attacked after becoming suspicious about Jak’s behaviour and confronting him about what I had seen on his phone.

“I was then subjected to a brutal and violent attack for over two hours.

"He kicked, punched and dragged me by my hair from one room to the next and I remember how he head butted me several times to the face.

“I passed out from the pain and woke finding him stroking my face in what I found to be in a creepy and possessive manner.

"If my neighbour hadn’t called the police, I honestly believe I would have subjected to an even more sustained attack with severe consequences.

"Following sentencing I now feel that I can move on from the attack and put it behind me knowing that he has received a custodial sentence for his actions."

Ms Bingall and Kosta were together for just four months when she was assaulted on Sunday, December 16, 2018, at around 3.15am.

Telling that the relationship was over, Kosta punched walls in the home and damaged items.

Fearing she may be harmed, Ms Bignall tried calling a friend but this call went to an answerphone, the message left helped record the attack.

Her calls for help that followed were heard by a neighbour who called police and we attended.

Investigating officer PC Sarah Faircloth, of Harlow’s Domestic Abuse Investigations Team, said: “Throughout this case, Emma has shown real courage despite being subjected to a sustained and violent attack by Kosta.

“That morning Emma was dragged off the sofa, head-butted and punched her to the head.

“She sustained a numerous facial injuries including a heavily bruised and black left eye, bruising around the right eye, a cut to the bridge of her nose, bruising behind her right ear and bruising to her body.

“Yesterday, she bravely attended court and read her statement before Kosta was taken to his prison cell.”
