A GP practice has become the first in Haringey and north London to be awarded an outstanding rating from the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

The CQC found the West Green Surgery in Tottenham to be providing an overall outstanding service, particularly in the responsive and well-led domains it assesses.

Led by brothers Dr Muhammed Akunjee and Dr Nazmul Akunjee, the surgery has won multiple awards over the years.

This includes a recent innovation award from the Royal College of GPs for the development of an automated communication system which supports patients to manage their diabetes and chronic diseases more effectively.

West Green Surgery looks after 15,000 patients and is located in a deprived area of Haringey.

The Akunjee brothers took over the practice from their father in 2012, having grown up in the flat above the surgery’s premises.

Dr Muhammed Akunjee felt that it was a “great honour” for the CQC to recognise the work the surgery does.

He said: “It acknowledges and recognises the immense hard work that all of our staff do, going the extra mile to try and give the best possible service for our patients. The recognition is even more pertinent because West Green Surgery is located in an area of high deprivation.

“It is also a proud day for Haringey CCG, and I would like to express my gratitude to Dr Peter Christian, Chair of Haringey CCG, for his continual support and encouragement.”

Dr Peter Christian, Chair of Haringey Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), added that it was “fantastic news” for the surgery – and they deserved the recognition.

He said: “To have the first ‘outstanding’ practice in the whole of north Central London in our borough is really exciting.

“As a CCG, our aim is that everyone who lives in Haringey is able to access the best quality primary care and we are currently supporting our practices to work together in networks so that they can offer more services to patients and share best practice between them.”
