The Mayor of London has announced hundreds of events to celebrate London becoming the world’s first National Park City – with a flagship project to be hosted by Waltham Forest.

Launching on July 19, there will be ten days of fun celebrating London’s Green spaces, with all events aiming to get Londoners to enjoy the city’s wildlife habitats, green rooftops and waterways.

One of the main events will be hosted by Waltham Forest. Living Symphonies will be a unique audio installation in Epping Forest, a network of speakers hidden in the forest will create a musical composition that grows in the same way as a forest ecosystem, portraying the forest’s wildlife plants and atmosphere.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said: “Our National Park City Festival shows just how important it is to protect our environment, including our wildlife, and reconnects Londoners with the outdoors with lots of free events for everyone to enjoy across London’s beautiful green spaces, rooftops and waterways.

“After recent UN reports revealed that nature and biodiversity is being lost at an unprecedented rate, I am committed to helping make London the world’s first National Park City and protecting our green and blue spaces and wildlife."

Other events across London include a National Park City Stage. In partnership with the National Theatre, the Mayor will host a cultural free programme, including a live theatre performance of children's story The Gruffalo. There will also be events with live DJs and a show of costumes made out of living plants and grass.

In partnership with Open City, there will be free access to London’s most beautiful rooftop gardens and natural spaces, including: Crossrail Place in Canary Wharf, Barbican Conservatory and Ham Yard Hotel in Soho.

National Park City Splash will be a multi-site swimming and paddle sports event – with people of all abilities encouraged to try things like paddle boarding and open water swimming.
