A newly built set of retirement apartments will be named after a English monarch famously known for regularly visiting the district.

McCarthy and Stone, the UK’s leading developer of retirement homes, confirmed that the property site on Sewardstone Road, Waltham Abbey, will be named Lionheart Court, after King Richard I.

Known as Lionheart, King Richard I regularly visited the Royal Forest of Waltham and also granted Waltham Abbey a Charter to hold markets and fairs.

The Charter market has continued to this day on Tuesdays and Saturdays, making it of significant historical value to the town.

Julie Ward, national sales director for McCarthy and Stone, said: “We are extremely proud to honour King Richard I and the Charter Market, by naming our new Waltham Abbey development after him.

“We wanted to choose a name for our new Waltham Abbey development that is not only meaningful, but would also resonate with local people and future McCarthy and Stone homeowners.”
