CAMPAIGNERS are demanding more improvements to a Hampshire junction where a toddler miraculously escaped unhurt in a two-car crash.

Traffic lights and a mini roundabout are among the suggestions being put forward by people living near a busy section of the main Lymington to New Milton road.

The accident happened at the junction of the A337 at the B3058, which leads down to Milford on Sea.

As reported in the Daily Echo, a two-year-old girl was found sitting unscathed in her baby seat in the back of a Ford Mondeo - one of the vehicles involved in the crash.

Daily Echo:

The toddler was placed in a pushchair and reunited with her father, who rushed to the scene after being told about the collision.

Fire crews from Beaulieu, Lymington and New Milton attended the accident along with two ambulances.

Firefighters removed the roof of the Mondeo, enabling two women to be freed from the wreckage. They were placed on body boards before being transferred to Southampton General Hospital.

One of the people who took to social media following the collision said: "An accident waiting to happen. Such a dangerous junction."

Daily Echo:

A householder whose garden backs on to the junction added: "I've been here for just over two years. This is the third major incident. More needs to be done."

Other social media users warned that extra traffic likely to be generated by 40 homes being built at Milford could result in more crashes.

Cllr Rob Humby, the county council’s executive member for transport, said previous accidents had resulted in improvements to the junction, including better signing and changes to the road markings.

Speaking about the recent incident he said: “We’ll be requesting details from the police and reviewing the position in the light of this information.

“The review will include consideration of the circumstances of the collision and whether any further changes are required.

“Safety always comes first but traffic collisions can be caused by a range of factors and it is important that safety measures are based on careful consideration of the circumstances in a case such as this.

“We will always prioritise resources to sites where there is evidence that new traffic measures will bring about improvements in terms of casualty reduction.”

The accident happened on January 8.

The Mondeo was badly damaged in the collision but a South Central Ambulance Service spokesperson later described the condition of the two women as “non-life threatening”.
