Students are helping run a cafe to enable to open an additional day during the week.
Four Year 11 students from West Lea School in Edmonton have taken charge of Palmers Greenery Community Cafe in Broomfield Park on Tuesdays under supervision.
The café is a volunteer-powered not-for-profit business that provides a space for the community to come together. The surplus money the café makes is reinvested back into the park and park-based projects.
Sarah Cotton, co-founder of the Palmers Greenery, said: “We have been able to build a partnership with West Lea School that brings such great benefits to both parties.”
West Lea is a special needs school for pupils aged 4-19. Their work experience with the café is part of its Learning for Life programme.
Sue Tripp, head teacher at West Lea School, said: “We are delighted with the positive impact our students are having both in the café and subsequently the local community. Working at the café is a fantastic opportunity for them to hone and develop real life skills that are integral to any working environment.”
The café is now open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
