A playground is set for a revamp after thousands of pounds were invested by a council to improve it.

Watford Borough Council approved in its annual budget last week an £100,000 investment into revamping Lea Farm Recreation Ground in Garston.

This will include a new perimeter path which was petitioned to the council last year by Karen Bell, from Garston, who said it would help make the park “smoother and safer”.

The petition reached more than 70 signatures online.

Speaking to the Observer in October 2019, Ms Bell said: "It’s a much treasured local park for residents in Garston but to increase usage, and for it to be enjoyed by nearby residents, particularly those with walking impairments and families with pushchairs, it really needs a perimeter path established.”

The path is expected to improve accessibility to the park, particularly those with mobility issues.

After the £100,000 funding was approved, Meriden Ward Councillor Amanda Grimston said: “This is great news that we've been able to get this into the budget and it will certainly make the park more accessible for nearby residents, particularly those with walking impairments and families with pushchairs.

"Our parks are managed so well by Veolia, and it's great to get out into our open spaces and to enjoy the wonderful displays in the flower beds".

The investment into the park is also being used to help it achieve a Green Flag status by furthering the offerings of the park.

Garston Councillor Tim Williams, portfolio holder and responsible for parks at Watford Borough Council, said: "As a Council we've made great investment in our Parks and Open Spaces that we know are enjoyed by many residents, and we are rightly proud of receiving twelve prestigious Green Flag Awards, more than any other district in Hertfordshire.

"I know that Lea Farm is much loved by Garston Residents and achieving this 100K funding is excellent news for the area and we look forward to seeing the improvements to Lea Farm Recreation Ground."
