A man accused of stabbing a 15-year-old boy to death after stealing a pair of trainers told police he was acting in self defence.

Romario Lindo, 21, is standing trial for the murder of Perry Jordan Brammer, 15, who was knifed 10 times on the Broadwater Farm Estate in Tottenham on August 30 last year.

Perry was subjected to an attack all over his body, and knife wounds found on his face and neck, chest, and buttocks, the jury at Woolwich Crown Court has heard.

He died from his injuries on September 4.

When questioned by police on September 6, Lindo said he was not carrying a weapon, and alleged it was Perry who "was clearly holding a knife".

In a written statement, Lindo described the teenager's face as "screwed up full of anger and aggression and I was scared".

During the "scuffle with the knife man" Lindo claimed he was also injured, and told officers: "The knife man struck out at me with the knife.

"The knife cut my left upper arm through my clothing and caused terrible pain, blood was pouring out."

He added: "I feared I was going to die, I felt dizzy."

Eventually the knife fell to the ground, and Lindo wrote: "I did not own or carry a knife (...) I acted in self defence", however, he did admit using the weapon to stab the 15-year-old, also saying: "I accept that I must have made contact with the knife, including his face."

Perry, from Tottenham, and Lindo became involved in the altercation on Willan Road after the 15-year-old tried to help another boy who had been robbed of new trainers.

The prosecution says Perry "paid with his life" after Lindo stole the brand new £90 shoes, belonging to a friend of a friend of Perry's, outside Bruce Grove Station earlier that morning.

The defendant sat in the dock on Tuesday with his head on the table, as the jury were shown CCTV of the robbery, which was over in a matter of seconds.

Lindo, who the jury heard lived in Enfield, has admitted robbery, but denies murder and possession of a knife.

The trial continues.
