Plans are in place for some minor repairs and alterations around Newtown’s skatepark area, with improvements to drainage, signage, waste receptacles and seating area, along with some minor concrete repairs.

Open Newtown will be working with all local youths, to enable them to join in with recreation activities, such as planned forestry / river school experience, mountain bike trail, BMX pump track and adventure trails.

Long term the group would like to introduce some lighting in the skate park area, to discourage anti-social activities, whilst encouraging appropriate social activities.

A spokesman for Open Newtown said: “There’s a lot of misinformation around the skatepark users. Pre-teens and teens create typical litter for that age group, which is entirely manageable, but in the past it’s adults who have frequented the park at night, who have been known to smash glass in the area, which children are then having to sweep up.

“Much in the way that lighting has been installed at St Mary’s Church, to discourage anti-social behaviour, we’re hoping that lighting would have the same effect at the skatepark.”
