UP TO 35 new houses planned for a Furness village have been given the green light.

Plans to build dozens of new houses off London Road in Lindal-in-Furness have been approved by Barrow Borough Council.

Housing developers Chandlers Country Homes are heading the development on the five-acre site which is partly used for allotments at the moment.

The aim is to create a two to three-bedroom affordable starter homes and eight for the over 55, along with detached and semi-detached properties.

The scheme will offer parking for up to 17 vehicles for existing residents on London Road, as well as landscaping and junction improvements where the road meets the busy A590.

Lindal and Marton Parish Council unanimously opposed the development on the grounds of highways, sewerage and drainage issues and traffic concerns.

One of the original issues had been the proposed loss of a pavement close to where London Road meets the busy A590, with concerns expressed about congestion and the chance of collisions.

The proposal now includes pavements on either side of London Road.

Lindal and Marton Parish Councillor, Alf Waite, said he does not see a demand for more houses in Lindal.

He said: "I don't believe there is a demand for new houses in Lindal.

"There are other places to build like Dalton or Ulverston.

"I can't see the plans actually going ahead myself.

"Numerous concerns have been raised about the volume of traffic and road access due to the traffic.

"The local pub has complained about the potential parking issues. All these things have to be addressed before work actually starts."
