A local assembly member is excited for the extension of the ULEZ following reductions in Nitrogen Dioxide at an historically polluted roundabout.
The Crooked Billet roundabout in Walthamstow was identified by London Mayor Sadiq Khan as a ‘toxic air pollution’ hotspot in 2016.
New data revealed by City Hall shows the Nitrogen Dioxide levels (NO2) levels have been greatly reduced in the last four years.
In 2016 the roundabout exceeded the hourly legal NO2 value on 15 occasions. In 2019 it did not exceed the limit once.
The annual average NO2 at the roundabout has been reduced by 12 per cent between 2016 – 2019 and PM10 levels – a pollutant mixture of liquid droplets in the air – have been reduced by 10 per cent during the same period.
London Assembly Member, Jennette Arnold OBE AM, said: “It is fantastic to see how this local air pollution hotspot has been tackled head-on over the last few years. This shows that the plethora of measures being undertaken by City Hall to protect the health of Londoners are starting to have a significant impact.
“Toxic air is a silent killer, disproportionately affecting the most deprived communities, contributing to the premature deaths of almost 10,000 Londoners per year and stunting the lung development of our children.
“We can now look forward to the extension of the ULEZ next year, which is set to build upon this progress even further.”
The City Hall data timeframe coincides with the implementation of the central London Ultra Low Emission Zone and the twelve Low Emission Bus Zones.
Annual average NO2 reduced by an average of 21 per cent at monitoring sites London-wide.
Sadiq Khan, said: “Toxic air is a national health crisis contributing to thousands of premature deaths ever year. I have taken bold action in London with measures such as the world’s first Ultra Low Emission Zone and Low Emission Bus Zones, and it’s undeniable that these are making a difference to the air we breathe.
