The leader of Barnet Council has provided a further update for residents following the introduction of Government restrictions designed to stop the spread of coronavirus.

In a statement issued on Tuesday (March 24), Cllr Dan Thomas urged people to follow the Prime Minister’s new measures and stay at home “unless it is to shop for food or medicine, go for outdoor exercise once a day, seek medical attention, or travel to work if absolutely necessary”.

Cllr Thomas (Conservative, Finchley Church End) explained “significant changes” to council services were likely, as only the most essential staff are now able to travel.

Waste and recycling collections are likely to be affected, despite “well established emergency plans” to keep them running.

The council has set up a website to allow residents and businesses to keep up to date with any service changes at barnet.gov.uk/covid19. It also includes support for those who may face financial difficultly and advice for businesses and employers.

Following the introduction of the Government restrictions, Cllr Thomas said weddings will be cancelled, and libraries, leisure centres and gyms will remain closed.

Funerals will be allowed, subject to attendees observing social distancing rules, while schools are open to the children of keyworkers only. The council leader asked parents to “only send your children if strictly necessary”.

He added that parks and open spaces remain open for exercise, but people must keep their distance from anyone who does not live in their household. Children’s play areas, toilets and outdoor facilities are closed.
