MORE than 20 firefighters tackled a forest fire at an area of woodland today.

A large area of Dewlands Common in Verwood was damaged during the blaze.

It was reported at 3.33pm today that 22 firefighters from Dorset and Wiltshire Fire Rescue and Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service worked together to tackle and contain the fire.

Wildlife animals such as a snake and lizard were also spotted in the damaged section of woodland.

A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire Rescue said: "These incidents are hugely detrimental to the wildlife.

"We would urge all users of the heathland to take extra care during these times of high fire risk."
