Motorists using a busy junction of the M25 are facing disruption for an estimated six months when roadworks are due to start later this month.

A public notice from Highways England published this week outlines an order that is set to come into force on March 20 to allow contractors to carry out a delayed improvement scheme at Junction 23 Bignell’s Corner, including roundabout and slip road widening.

The order will have a maximum duration of 18 months at the junction where South Mimms Services are located, but work is expected to begin on or after March 22 and last for approximately six months.

The effect of the order would be to apply, in phases:

1) The overnight closure of the A1(M)/A1 between the exit and entry slip roads at Junction 1; the overnight closure of all the slip roads leading to and from both carriageways of the M25; the overnight closure of the slip roads leading to and from the carriageways of the A1(M) and A1; the overnight closure of the roundabout.

2) To impose a 24-hour width restriction on both lanes of the road leading from the anti-clockwise carriageway of the M25

3) To impose a 24-hour 50mph speed limit on the roundabout where and when sections of it remain open.

The overnight closures will take place from 10pm to 5.30am Mondays to Thursdays, 11pm to 6am on Fridays, 10pm to 6am on Saturdays and 10.30pm to 5.30am on Sundays, with the exception of the A1 slip roads which may close from 9pm to 6am.

Traffic affected by the closures will be diverted by leaving and re-joining the carriageway at Bignell’s Corner, and be using other junctions of the M25, A1(M) and A1.
