A man has been arrested after allegedly trying to open the cashbox behind a till at a Sainsbury's store in Charlton.

Police say he was seen going onto the "staff area" of till 21 in the store.

The security guard "feared" he was trying to break into the till so reportedly ran around to find the suspect "kneeling down trying to jimmy open the cashbox behind the till with a screwdriver."

The security guard then reportedly challenged and detained the suspect into the store holding room.

Police say the suspect struggled against the security guard.

Officers arrived on the scene and arrested the suspect for attempted burglary.

Police say the suspect initially gave false details before the correct ones.

He was reportedly shown to be wanted for two burglaries in Essex and one in Hertforshire, and on recall to prison.

Bexley Police congratulated the work of the Sainsbury's security team and Bexleyheath response team B.

They said: "Great work by @sainsburys Security Team #Charlton and Response Team B #Bexley.

"Suspect Arrested X 3 for Burglary, Two in Essex and one in Hertfordshire

"X 1 for Attempted Burglary Prison Recall

"Great work."
