The excitement was continuing to build 42 years ago this month as Watford’s quest for promotion to the promised land gathered pace with the season entering the closing stretch.

The Hornets began March 1982 with a goalless draw at home to Cambridge United before QPR were swept aside 4-0 at Vicarage Road. A 4-2 defeat at Norwich City was a hiccup, but Graham Taylor’s side responded with a 2-0 win at Grimsby Town and a 3-1 home victory over Shrewsbury Town before the month ended with Bolton Wanderers visiting Vicarage Road on March 27.

An attendance of 12,963 was recorded as Luther Blissett’s second successive brace, including a penalty in each game, plus a Jan Lohman goal secured a 3-0 victory.

It was a win that also took the Hornets two points clear at the top of the table above Luton Town with ten games to play, although the eventual champions had two matches in hand at that stage of the season.
