Rubbish being thrown from tower blocks has been caught on camera 11 times on one housing estate alone in Tottenham, it has emerged.

New CCTV technology is being installed by Haringey Council that has recorded “high rise dumping” from windows up to 17 storeys up on the Broadwater Farm estate, and more is planned.

Offenders have been caught throwing glass bottles, used nappies, hygiene products, gym equipment and even furniture out of windows.

The surveillance operation has already led to three £1,000 fines being issued to perpetrators.

“Littering from windows can be dangerous for people passing below,” Cllr Sarah Williams warned.

“But technology is helping tackle this anti-social behaviour by pinpointing the perpetrators.”

The AI cameras can distinguish between different kinds of movement, detecting even a tissue thrown out of a window — but are sensitive enough to avoid false triggers like birds.

They also don’t breach anyone’s privacy, the authority assures, as they are not pointed directly at people’s homes.
