The shortlist has been announced for Ally Pally's annual children's book award.
The Biblio-Buzz Alexandra Palace Children’s Book Award 2026 aims to encourage a love of reading among nine to 12-year-olds.
Delivered in partnership with Haringey Library Services, schools, and local bookshops, the initiative is a cornerstone of Alexandra Palace's creative learning programme.
Emma Dagnes OBE, chief executive of Alexandra Park and Palace Charitable Trust, said: "We are proud to launch this year’s Biblio-Buzz at a moment when it matters more than ever.
"A recent report by the National Literacy Trust shows a significant decline in young people owning books and reading for pleasure, and programmes like ours play a vital role in reversing that trend."
The scheme challenges children to read six shortlisted novels between January and April, take part in literary challenges and cast votes for their favourite book.
Last year, more than 1,500 young readers participated, and organisers expect even greater numbers in 2026.
The programme concludes with an awards ceremony at Alexandra Palace Theatre, giving young people the chance to meet authors, get books signed, take part in workshops and celebrate the winning title.
This year’s shortlist includes Birdie by J.P. Rose, Chronicles of Whetherwhy: The Age of Enchantment by Anna James, Fallout by Lesley Parr, People Like Stars by Patrice Lawrence, The Beck by Anthony McGowan, and The Wrong Shoes by Tom Percival.
Cllr Emily Arkell, Haringey Council’s cabinet member for culture and leisure, said: "I’m delighted that our libraries are once again supporting this fantastic award, which I know will capture the imagination and enthusiasm of nine to 12-year-olds from across the borough.
"Biblio-Buzz is a wonderful opportunity for children to experience the joy of reading, as well as getting involved in workshops and other activities at their local library.
"I’m excited to see which book children choose as their favourite."
The shortlist was selected by educationalists, school librarians, authors and volunteers.
Books are available at a discount through Muswell Hill Children’s Bookshop and Pickled Pepper Books for schools and individuals taking part.
