A borough-wide safety alert has been issued after two businesses were prosecuted for supplying dangerous electric fans to shops in Enfield.

Mark Klein, of MK Promotions, Nottingham, and Memon International Limited, of Dominion Business Park, Edmonton, both admitted distributing unsafe appliances to shops.

Mr Klein was given a three-year conditional discharge and ordered to pay costs of £1,450, and Memon was fined £2,500 with £938 costs by Enfield Magistrates.

Stocks of the electrical appliances were seized from shops by trading standards officers during random shop visits. They were tested and found to be potentially lethal.

Residents are being advised to inform Enfield Council's trading standards officers if they come across the rogue items.

Cllr Terry Neville, the council's cabinet member for the environment, said: "Our trading standards team makes regular checks on electrical items to ensure the public's safety.

"Where electrical goods show any fault, shop owners are asked to withdraw them from the shelves and the public is warned of the dangers.

Where safety is compromised there is little excuse and the council will always take firm action."

The dangerous products are the Bachmayr L30B fan, Manny's Marvels 20-ins three-speed floor standing fan, Bachmayr 20-ins three-speed floor standing fan, the Astor/CTC BI-81 fan and the Sentik MD60-1955 fan.
