Matt Wallace’s hopes of retaining his BMW International Open title came to a wet end on the final hole in Munich yesterday.
The Moor Park Golf Club honorary member came to the par five 18th one shot behind clubhouse leader Andrea Pavan, knowing a birdie would see him into a play-off for the title.
However, the 29-year-old found water twice and ultimately did well to salvage a bogey six, meaning he finished in a seven-way tie for third on 13-under-par at Golfclub Munchen Eichenreid.
Wallace’s playing partner Matthew Fitzpatrick did birdie the last to finish level with Pavan on 15-under, but it was the Italian who came out on top at the second extra hole to take the title.
Starting the day two shots off the overnight lead on 11-under, the four-time European Tour winner had made five birdies and two bogeys before his title challenge came to an end on 18.
Moor Park-attached professional Callum Shinkwin finished one shot further back on 12-under to secure one of his best results so far this year.
The 26-year-old, who lost his tour card last season, followed up rounds of 69, 69 and 70 with a four-under 68 to finish in a four-way share for 10th place.
