Councillors have called for better funding for homes from the Chancellor ahead of the budget this week.
Councillor Joe Goldberg is calling on George Osborne to make house building a priority to help economic growth in the borough.
He has also called for the Chancellor to lift the cap on the amount councils are able to borrow for house building.
Councillor Goldberg said: “A proper commitment to building new homes would help deal with the affordable housing crisis across London and also help create the jobs and growth places like Haringey so desperately need.
“We’ve set out our ambitions as a council to build 500 new homes across the borough – we’re now urging the Government to play its part and give councils the resources and flexibility to start building now.”
The maximum amount Haringey Borough Council can currently borrow for house building is £54million, enough to build 450 new homes.
Cabinet member for housing councillor John Bevan said: “Dealing with the crisis in housing supply is arguably London’s most pressing challenge.
“Allowing councils to push ahead with investing in new homes would undoubtedly give a boost to the local economy.
“It would also start addressing housing costs in the capital that continue to spiral out of control.”
