Haringey Borough Council’s environment chief is warning business owners to stop dumping rubbish outside properties or face hefty fines.

Councillor Nilgun Canver, cabinet member for the environment, said people are “sick” of seeing the eyesore of garbage left on streets and reminded business owners that they face thousands of pounds worth of fines if they are caught flytipping.

Council waste contractor Veolia is carrying out spot checks across the borough, with offending businesses charged £1,600 in fines plus £1,715 in costs and a £75 victim surcharge.

Cllr Canver said: "Most traders support their communities and dispose of their waste correctly.

"But everybody is sick of that minority of traders who leave bags of rubbish outside their properties and expect people to clear them away.

“These are eyesores and make our streets and paths seem messy even when they have just been swept."

She said business owners must make provisions to remove their waste properly, otherwise they will be prosecuted.
