Angry motorists have started a petition against new parking measures introduced on their estate in Tottenham.

The Ferry Lane Residents Car Users group, has accused Homes for Haringey of failing to properly consult residents before putting in a parking restriction from 8am to 6pm.

They say the company, which provides social housing for Haringey Borough Council, has also failed to ensure people who do not speak English as a first language understand the consultation.

Petition organiser Anthony Umoja, of Aramdale Close, said he was very upset with the current parking restrictions.

He said: “When I was going around getting people to sign our petition I found that there were lots of people who were not even aware that a consultation had taken place.

“I was speaking to a Turkish woman and her sister and they had no idea what I was talking about. This is when I realised that I was doing the council’s job of making sure people know what is happening on their streets.”

The group claims that people who live on the estate are being fined for parking outside their homes and some have had to sell their cars in order to avoid the penalty.

It has since put together a petition and gathered signatures of more than 400 residents who want the restrictions to be changed to 8am to 10am.

Mr Umoja added: “I’m really upset about this because we all initially thought that the restrictions would be from 8am to 10am.

“But when the signs went up it was from 8am to 6pm, which none of us are happy with.”

A Homes for Haringey spokesman said the scheme will be reviewed this autumn.

She said: “Last year Homes for Haringey undertook a full consultation of all residents on Ferry Lane regarding the parking arrangements on the estate.

“The new parking arrangements have been informed by the outcome of this consultation.

“We will be reviewing how the scheme has been operating in the autumn and will be working with the Residents Association closer to the time to gather resident feedback.”
