Labour maintained a clear lead in a by-election prompted by the death of a councillor.

The party's candidate Charles Wright was yesterday elected to represent Woodside ward on Haringey Borough Council with 1,331 votes.

Liberal Democrat Dawn Barnes came second with 482 votes, more than the party's candidate received in May, while Green Party candidate Tom Davidson came third with 191 votes.

UKIP's Robert Price beat Conservative Scott Green into fourth place, with 161 votes to the Tory candidate's 140.

Representing Trade Unionists and Socialists Against Cuts, Vivek Lehal received 35 votes, while Independent Pauline Gibson polled 23.

The turnout was 25.03 per cent.

The by-election was triggered by the death of Labour councillor Pat Egan during the summer.
