An official complaint has been made to Tottenham Hotspur over homophobic chants from fans.

The complaint arose from Tottenham’s last Premier League fixture away at West Bromwich Albion.

Spurs fans in the away end were heard singing ‘Chelsea rent boys, we’re coming for you’ a jibe aimed at Chelsea FC, who Tottenham are due to take on in the Capital One Cup Final at the end of the month.

The chant is considered to be homophobic as it casts homosexuality and sex workers in a negative light.

After the game Proud Lilywhites (@SpursLGBT ), a group backed by Tottenham Hotspur which represents LGBT fans, tweeted the club and Kick It Out, football’s anti-discrimination body, saying: “concerned to hear homophobic chanting from our fans today. We'll be writing to you directly with details. #COYS”

Tottenham Hotspur confirmed a complaint had been made and issued the following statement: “We condemn all discriminatory language on and off the pitch.

“We urge anyone who hears any form of abuse or discrimination at a match to report the matter to the nearest steward or police official or use either the host club’s confidential reporting service or the Kick It Out app to ensure immediate action can be taken.

“Regrettably, in this instance, the incident was not reported at the time which means it is extremely difficult to track any offenders after the event has taken place.

“The club has robustly supported and aided the development and growth of Proud Lilywhites, our first LGB&T fan group, since their inception 12 months ago, while our forthcoming fixture against Arsenal is our nominated match for our Kick It Out Season of Action.

“Throughout this week we have been highlighting our anti-discriminatory work, including the Proud Lilywhites v Gay Gooners match.”

Proud Lilywhites ran out 7-1 winners in the match with Gay Gooners and Co-Chair of the Spurs LGBT fan group Chris Paouros said: “We’re working hard to eradicate all homophobia from football and it was disappointing to hear these chants from our fans at the Hawthorns.

“Hopefully highlighting instances like these will make people stop and think.”
