The sounds of glasses clinking and happy chattering filled the air as a pub was officially reopened.

Crowds of drinkers came out on Friday for the grand reopening of North London’s first community pub The Antwerp Arms – also known as The Annie – in Church Road, Tottenham.

See our video of the opening night below.

Serving Tottenham-brewed Redemption Ale, along with a wide range of lagers, wines and spirits, the family-friendly and dog-friendly pub also features a beer garden and a darts board.

Ashley Grey, a founding member of the Antwerp Arms Association, said: “I’m delighted to see how busy it is – I was so worried it’d be me and the bar staff sat twiddling our thumbs but instead we have a pub full of people.

“It has been a long process, from trying to build up funds to getting it ready, but now that it is finally open we are all very pleased with what we have achieved.”

The pub was bought by the Antwerp Arms Association in November last year, following a long battle against developer Hinterwill, which wanted to turn the building into flats.

After receiving a grant from the Social Investment Business, along with funds donated from around 300 share holders, the community group were able to save the pub and get started on renovations ahead of Friday’s opening.

A former regular, who returned for the opening, said: “It’s good to see that they’ve been able to deliver what they promised.

“Although we were coming in before, we still feel very welcome here and they’ve made a point to accommodate us.

“It’s good that it is finally open and this busy again.”

The pub now hopes to continue its success by hosting regular live music evenings, establishing a darts team and will encourage community members to host their own groups and clubs on the premises.
