A FATHER who hurled racist and Islamophobic abuse at a “vulnerable” Turkish pensioner before throwing his zimmer frame off a bus has been jailed.

Kashif Samuels, 25, of Duffield Drive, Tottenham, was sentenced to 16 weeks imprisonment at Highbury Magistrates’ Court today, after pleading guilty on October 21 to a racially and religiously aggravated public order.

He was also made to pay £320 in court costs.

The incident took place on board a route 149 bus travelling through Tottenham on October 15, which unemployed Samuels had boarded at Edmonton Green with his two-year-old daughter.

The court was shown a three minute video of the foul-mouthed tirade, which went viral on Youtube, in which Samuels accused the man of coming to the country for “free benefit”.

He said: “You’re talking in a different language because nobody knows what you’re saying.

“I’ll put a pig’s **** in your mouth – what’s Allah going to say about that?

“That’s why you’re here, free benefits and a walker. Your walker is going to go flying when the bus stops. What are you going to do? Nothing. Why don’t you go back to Turkey?”

The video ends with Samuels throwing the man’s zimmer frame off the bus.

Referring to the footage, prosecutor Michael Mallon said: “It speaks for itself. What is clear is the victim was vulnerable. He was an elderly Turkish gentleman.

“There are a number of aggravating features. Namely that Mr Samuels was there with his two-year-old daughter in a pram. This offence was committed while he was on bail for the first matter.

“A large number of individuals were present on the bus. It is telling, in my submission, they did not intervene, given the amount of aggression, there was a very real fear they would come to harm.”

Mr Mallon added: “He was vulnerable, he had a zimmer frame. Mr Samuels decided to end the incident by throwing the zimmer frame off the bus.”

Defence Dan O’Callaghan said Samuels was now “living in fear” since the video went viral, and had moved out of his parents’ home to a “secret address” after receiving threats.

He told the court: “As a result he has had to move from his address because there have been threats. It was worked out what address he lived at. He has had to move away from his mother. He is living at a secret address with a friend.

“He is now living in fear because of the publicity, and the threats from the Muslim community and the Turkish community.”

Mr O’Callaghan also said the victim had called Samuels a “black animal” shortly before, after the pair got into an argument over the zimmer frame.

He said: “He asked the gentleman to move it so a woman could get her pushchair on and he refused to, and that started a war of words between them.”

Mr O’Callaghan added: “He was absolutely horrified when he saw the video. He was not even aware he was behaving so badly. Nevertheless, he contacted solicitors and said ‘I want to hand myself in to a police station’. And by then the video was all over Youtube.”

Sentencing him, panel chair Melvyn Bryant said: “This was a vulnerable victim. It was a prolonged incident. You had your child present. There were other passengers present on a busy bus, and of course you were also on bail.

“It then becomes worse because you targeted someone who is Turkish and is a Muslim and threw his zimmer frame out the door.”

After the October 21 incident, Samuels wrote on Facebook: "I said some horrible vile and disgusting things to a man...I can only stand up and take responsibility for my own actions.

"I sincerely and humbly apologize to everyone effected by my actions words not just in the Muslim or Turkish community but in all communities around the world and I mean that from the bottom of my heart.

"I was angry and reacted in a manner that can never be excused and all i can do now is offer my sincere apologies and seek help for the anger issues I clearly have."
