Unfortunately March was a dreadful month in 2020, it marked the start of lockdown and hospitals were overwhelmed.

After previous rumours of Covid-19 at Northwick Park Hospital, the first coronavirus case at the north London hospital was confirmed on March 5. From there the situation was quite dire at the hospital as admissions and deaths escalated from the unforeseen virus.

The hospital then declared a “critical incident” on March 20 due to the surge of coronavirus patients and running out of beds. Patients had to be transferred to neighbouring hospitals and the critical incident lasted for 24 hours before it was stood down.

Amid the chaos, Simon Panesar, who owns a two bedroom flat in Colindale, began to offer fast access housing to NHS staff – particularly for Northwick Park Hospital staff.

Mr Panesar was intending to sell his property – but the sale fell through several weeks earlier as the pandemic took hold.

He then planned to rent the flat, but after seeing footage of hospitals in Italy he decided to accommodate NHS workers undergoing similar stress.

Civil rights activist Amal Abdirahman, who has lived in Enfield for four years, said she aimed to be running to become the first female president in Somalia.

After seeing the country “struggle”, she hoped to lay a foundation of societal improvements by tackling the divide particularly in class and gender.
