A man is fighting for his life in hospital after police found him “agitated” and “in distress”.

Metropolitan Police says it was called to Waldegrave Road in Haringey on Thursday, March 18, at 7.35pm following reports of a loud disturbance and a man being assaulted at a residential address.

Officers found a 44-year-old man who was agitated and in a state of distress, the force said.

He had to be restrained by officers and the London Ambulance Service was called.

But the man’s condition worsened before paramedics arrived. He was treated at the scene, first by officers and then by paramedics.

He was transported to a north London hospital where he remains in a life-threatening condition.

The man who called police did not require hospital treatment.

Detective Chief Superintendent Treena Fleming, in charge of policing for Enfield and Haringey, said: “My thoughts and those of my officers are with the man and his family at this difficult time as he continues to receive medical treatment.

“My officers were responding to a call for urgent assistance by a member of the public who was extremely concerned for their safety. They were met by a man who was clearly distressed and acting in a way that caused great concern to those in attendance. They provided first aid when his condition deteriorated.

“My officers are being supported and are fully assisting with information to understand the full circumstances of the incident.

“Due to my officers being present, our Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed; it is only right that all of the facts are reviewed, and we take the necessary amount of time to assess their findings. I would therefore respectfully ask that our residents and communities avoid any further speculation on the incident until we understand the full circumstances of what happened.”

A referral has also been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

There have been no arrests.
