An eight-year-old maths whizz from Enfield has been crowned ‘top mathlete’ as part of a global competition.

Gold medal winner Yaseen from Kingfisher Hall Primary Academy scooped the award in the UK Year 3 category of the World Maths Day challenge - a worldwide competition in which over a million students from 17,000 schools participate.

Yaseen and his classmates tested their mathematical prowess against their peers during activities designed to make maths fun.

Following his triumph he joins nine other UK champions from different age group categories.

Event organiser, Graham Frickers from 3P Learning, the creators of the Mathletics platform on which the global challenge is hosted, said: “The response to this year’s competition has been incredible – there is a global buzz about maths.

“It’s a tough competition and I’m delighted to congratulate our 10 UK champions for their significant achievements."

Headteacher at Kingfisher Hall Primary Academy, Matthew Clifford, said: “I’m so proud of Yaseen, he’s a real star!

“All our children absolutely loved competing, every correct answer was worth one point towards a student’s score and pupils progressed through 20 live maths games, of varying difficulties based on the student's age.”

Yaseen said: “I really love maths, and I love winning points, it’s so exciting.”

An online Hall of Fame tracked points throughout the competition with prizes awarded to the top pupils and schools across the globe.

The UK winners will receive a trophy engraved with their name in the next few weeks.
