Haringey’s Sam Gabriel took top honours at the North London regional final of the Jack Petchey London & Essex Schools Singles Championships, run in partnership with Table Tennis England, last Thursday.

Celebrating its 10th year, the boys event, held at London Academy, Barnet, attracted 77 players from 13 schools across Barnet, Enfield, Haringey and Waltham Forest.

The Under-13 Boys’ event was won by Gabriel, 12, from Fortismere School, who beat Max Gonpot, also 12, from Haringey’s Woodside High School, winning 11-4, 11-8, 8-11, 11-4 in a tight final.

Gabriel said of his win: “This was a good competition and I am glad I won so I can play in the final.” He is ranked third in the UK at under-12 level.

Winners of the regional competitions progress to the Jack Petchey London & Essex School’s Singles Championships Final on Saturday, April 4 in the Sports Dock at the University of East London.
